Wind Lodge 1930

Above picture shows the Wine Lodge around the 1930's, although Walter Adams had passed the premises over to Edwin Perry by the 1930's, so perhaps this picture is earlier. Picture kindly supplied by Kevin Healey.

On the corner with Mill Lane this was the property of Wastall and Company, wine merchants, in 1885, responsible for the imprtation of fine wines. It went to Adams in 1901 and possibly to Ash's East Kent Brewery before ending with Mackeson.

War damage brought about its closure in 1941. It did reopen again post war, but in temporary, renovated premises. Plans for a new house were approved in September 1960. The original disappeared in March 1961 when the new, with the sign "Britannia" opened on 26 March 1962.

FORMER DOVER PUBLICAN'S DEATH

The death occurred at East Dulwich Hospital during the week-end of Mr. Charles Edwin Perry, late of Dover. He was 75.

Mr. Perry came to Dover in 1926 - having been 20 years resident manager of the Hammersmith Palace of Varieties, London - and took over the licence of the Wine Lodge, Townwall Street, being succeeded there by his son, Mr. E. E. Perry, the present tenant.

Having to leave Dover in 1940, Mr. Perry went into business at Paddington, and later acquired a high-class confectionery and tobacconist business in East Dulwich Grove, South-East London, opposite the hospital in which his sudden death occurred.

The funeral took place at Hammersmith Cemetery on Wednesday.
