THE "FIRST THURSDAY" NEWSLETTER

NEWSLETTER MAR 1997 No. 36

CHOICES EVENING

On Tuesday 11th March there is to be held the annual evening when the school is open to help Years 9 and 11 make their subject choices for Key Stage 4 and the 6th Form respectively.

The evening will start at 7.00 pm with a talk from the Headteacher addressing Year 9 and their parents, after which they will be free to visit all the subject departments and ask questions. At 7.45 pm the Headteacher will address Year 11 and their parents after which, again, they can visit the departments.

Mr Scott, the Careers Consultant from Kent Careers Service will be in attendance to offer advice throughout the evening.

DRAMA - Friday 7th/Saturday 8th March at 7.30 pm

Tickets are still available for the school drama production of "Spud Ferret and the Case of the Stolen Diamonds" and "Murder at St Barnabas" an exciting double bill of mystery and suspense.

The tickets cost £3.00 adult and £1.50 children and concessions.

MUSIC

On Wednesday 12th March at 7.30 pm we will be presenting our annual Spring Concert in the School Hall.

The programme will include a variety of instrumental music played by the school's musicians ranging from classical to jazz. Music presented by the Woodwind, Chamber and Jazz Groups will be interspersed with solo items featuring violin, clarinet, piano and the school organ. A particular feature of the concert will be performances by the School's Big Band which has become very popular with audiences.

During the interval a choice of cheese and wine or light refreshments will be served, included in the admission charge of £2.50 for adults and £1.00 for students.

Please make this concert known amongst family, friends and others who may be interested. You are warmly invited to attend and we hope you will be able to join us.

PFA

Thank you to those who turned out for the Wine and Wisdom - we only managed to field four tables this time raising just £70. The next Wine and Wisdom is to be held on Friday 18th April and we look forward to better support.

Plans to run a Race Night have had to be altered because of the notice required to organise the event - watch this space for this time next year!

Due to several Committee members retiring recently we have vacancies for new blood and would welcome any parent - or indeed friend - who might be willing to give a little time to the school.

200 Club

The winners of the February draw are as follows:

1st prize (£25) Mr J Bottle (36), 2nd prize (£15) Mr C Hale (188) and 3rd prize (£10) Mrs G Smith (103).

Money is now due from those parents and friends who pay half-yearly.

CCF

The CCF held two extremely successful events during the half-term holiday - an NCO Training Cadre and an Adventure Training Activities Camp. Over 40 Cadets, plus staff, participated.

Cadets will be entering a team to take part in 'Operation Conservation '97' at Archcliffe Fort on Sunday 9th March. The event occurs annually and is organised by the Dover Society. (We usually win the award).

The CCF are hoping to organise a sponsored Cadet March on Friday 14th March. Details will be available when known.

Recent inspections of the CCF by the military authorities in respect of equipment were passed with 'flying colours'. They were congratulated for their 'housekeeping'.

New accommodation for the CCF will soon appear on site. There will be a classroom and a much needed store for the adventure training equipment which, at the moment, is deteriorating rapidly in the very damp tunnels.
