Dover Grammar School for Boys
THE "FIRST THURSDAY"
NEWSLETTERPAUL DOEL 1982 - 2000
Everybody has been saddened to hear of the death of Paul Doel. Paul had only recently left school but still had many friends here. He had in fact visited the school only a few days before his tragic death in a road traffic accident.
Paul was a very popular member of the school. He had a very friendly open personality, well liked for his straightforwardness and humour. Paul was also a keen sportsman and member of football and cricket teams.
Paul's funeral was attended by many pupils, ex-pupils and staff from the school.

MUSIC
On the afternoon of Sunday 30th April the school's Big Band took part in Music 2000 - the Millennium Arts Project. This was a mammouth musical work performed outdoors in Pencester Gardens celebrating the history and life of the town of Dover. The music was especially written for the occasion by Kent composer Alan Vincent. The performance lasted from 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm and featured hundreds or musicians, both singers and instrumentalists, from several local primary and secondary schools together with the Wind Band of Dover Music Centre and singers from some adult choirs. The work was divided into four movements and our seventeen-strong Big Band played a specially composed piece, "Dover Parade 2", towards the end of Part 2. A large audience was gathered to hear the performance and the whole event seemed to be a great success.

SCHOOL LIBRARY NEWS
Tesco Computers - Although tokens are no longer being distributed the school still needs any vouchers you may have hidden in drawers and glove compartments! The response has really picked up over the past week so please keep them coming.
An order will be placed later this month or early next.
Last year's vouchers can also be converted if you discover any at the last minute.
Thank you to all who have contributed.
Free Books for Schools - These tokens are still appearing on crisp packets, etc., so please keep sending them in. Our aim is to build a collection of audio cassettes for loan to support the curriculum at all levels.
Orders need to be in by the end of the Summer Term.
Box Tops for Education - Cereals - This scheme was run by Nestlé earlier this year and we have received a cheque today for £10. There was a disappointing response to this appeal but it is relaunching in June and so with the others closed for this year perhaps we can turn our attention to this one.
Your support is appreciated for all the appeals and they do provide valuable and worthwhile extra resources in the Library which continues to grow and flourish.
