CCF
Congratulations must be given to all the cadets who met during half term for a sponsored 25km (16 miles) march through Dover and surrounding area. It was a long and hot day but everyone succeeded in completing the route. The money raised from this event will be going to the recently formed Corps of Drums which is run by Flt Lt Masters (F) every Friday evening after CCF and is much enjoyed by its participants.
Looking forward to the summer there are many activities planned including the recruit weekend at St Martins Plain, Folkestone. This has been arranged for all the recruits who joined following the presentation in assembly last month. There are also the annual section camps. The Army camp this year is at Penhale, Cornwall and the RAF section is going to RAF Lossiemouth. These look to be exceptional weeks for all involved.

OLD PHAROSIANS
The committee of the old boys' association met on Tuesday evening to make arrangements for various forthcoming events, including the annual meeting, football match and dinner on 29th September.
The next edition of the newsletter is now almost ready for publication and it is hoped each of this year's leaver will be given a copy - together with a membership application form - before they leave. Membership usually costs £5 a year, but the association offers new leavers a "bargain" membership of £1 a year for the first five years. We hope those leaving the school this summer will take advantage of this offer and join the association now, so that they can maintain their links with the school in the future.
The association has decided to build its own website and an appeal is to be made to any Old Pharosians who are expert in this field who might like to design it, and/or manage the site once it goes live.
We will be watching with interest today to see how former deputy head boy Antony Hook gets on in the General Election. He is the Liberal Democrat candidate for the Dover and Deal constituency and, if elected, would be the country's youngest MP, at just 21 year old.
The next committee meeting is on Tuesday 20th November at 7.00 pm.

SPORTS NEWS
The following cricket reports written by Mr K Onions:
Wednesday 9th May saw our usual opener of the season against our neighbours on their top pitch. With both the batting and bowling orders turned on their head to give a fair go to rising talent and trialists the game was seen as a trial game with the nature of performance more important than the result.
Winning the toss captain Greg Hill decided to bat first on what was a very fresh wicket with a good quick outfield.
The trialists performed well enough to book their place in the squad for the rest of the season scoring 85 for 5 wickets in their allotted 20 overs. First timers McKay (4) and Paisley (1) faired well off erratic Astor bowling which conceded 51 extras. Unfortunately Robert Mitchell made a nightmare start getting out for a duck in his first innings. Best batting figures go to Haste and Hill with 10 and 10 not out respectively.
Astor then went in to bat with a reasonably tough target needing a run rate of just over 4 runs an over.
It was with the ball that the trialists really shone as McKay and Paisley both took a wicket with figures of 1 wicket for 5 runs off 2 overs and 1 for 7 off 2 respectively. Mitchell more than made up for his duck with his bowling, taking a creditable 2 for 2 off 2 and taking 2 catches. Paisley, Howes Dray and Partington each took a catch. Other bowlers of merit were; O'Neil 1 for 2 off 2, Hill 1 for 0 off 2, and Partington 2 for 2 off 3, but the best figures of the day were from Ed Haste with 2 wickets for 0 runs off 1.3 overs. This domination in the field limited Astor to 34 all out leading to a clear Grammar victory of 51 runs. A very satisfying first performance.
Our second match of the season was on the following Friday 11th May, away to Chatham House in the County Cup first round.
Again Captain Hill won the toss and elected to bat. He obviously fancied his arm on the excellent pitch as he opened and then partnered all of his team-mates to an excellent captains innings of 69 not out. Other batsmen of note were Dray (6), Partington (3), McKay, Howes, Phillips and Arter each with 2 and Goodey with 1. Unfortunately Mitchell took an early lead in this season's duck cup with his second in succession but Paisley and Haste also joined him. With six extras this set a total of 93 for Chatham House to match off their 20 overs at just under 5 runs per over.
It was in the field again that we shone with some excellent bowling and without a catch dropped that we won this match. Bowlers of credit were; Phillips, 1 for 12 off 4, Haste 2 for 10 off 3 and Partington 2 for 14 off 3.5. Best figures of the day were recorded by Arter with 5 for 12 off 5 accounting for half of Chatham House's order with his spin. Howes took the only catch coming his way to limit Chatham House to 69 all out off 18.5 overs.
A very impressive victory over a much fancied side.
Our third game of the season was our first at home against Sir Roger Manwoods. Due to the Year 8 exams taking place this week a few regular players were on revision allowing squad players their chance to claim a regular place in the side.
Stand in captain Partington, in the absence of captain Hill, won the toss and taking a leaf out of his predecessor's book opted to bat first on what was to be a slow pitch. Struggling with the consistency of the Manwoods bowlers and their tight fielding cordon Dover struggled up to a total of 69 off their 20 overs with extras accounting for 31 of their score. Leading scorers were; Arter (17), Partington (7 not out), Howes (5), Law (4), O'Neil (3) and Haste (2). Johncock marked his debut with a duck.
With a run rate of 3.5 to achieve Manwoods set about their task with aplomb. Despite Dover's frugality with the extras only conceding 6, our bowlers were no match for the Manwoods batsmen who raced to a match winning 72 in only 15.3 overs only loosing two wickets. Bowlers of note were O'Neil 2 for 13 off 3 and Partington 0 for 12 off 5 with 1 maiden. A disappointing loss when we really should have done better with catches going down in the field for the first time this year and a disappointing amount of overthrows, gifting runs to a capable batting side.
The following day (23rd May) we had to turn things around to beat Norton Knatchbull away in the County Cup 2nd round. Restored captain Hill continued his winning streak by winning the toss and electing to bat on what was a very fast and small outfield.
Again Hill's eye was in, and it appeared so was the rest of our openers as they punished some loose Knatchbull bowling and fielding to put up a total of 140 in their 20 overs with only 7 coming from extras. Stars with the bat were: Hill with an excellent 51 including 10 fours (finally getting out this season to a catch, his batting average is 130!!), Phillips, 41 with 6 fours, Arter 39 (Not Out) with 6 fours and 1 six and Howes 2 Not Out.
With a run rate of over 7 per over needed against a rejuvenated Grammar fielding set up Knatchbull had a tough task.
Our bowlers attacked the Knatchbull openers with aplomb and very soon wickets were tumbling, Arter took up where he left off in the Cup against Chatham House taking 3 wickets for 22 off 4, Partington took 1 for 18 off 4, Haste 1 for 9 off 3 and Phillips 1 for 14 of 1.3. Hill capped off his excellent batting performance with the day's best figures of 3 for 6 off 4 with 1 maiden, a combined effort with bat and ball, which earned him the man of the match.
Catches were taken by Arter, Howes, Partington, Dray, Paisley and Hill to limit Knatchbull to 74 all out a grand victory
