Specialist Schools and Academies Trust

EXCELLENCE AND DIVERSITY
Business & Enterprise
Dear Parents and Students
As the first term of the new academic year draws to a close, I am pleased to be able to write to you all through the Focus Newsletter. Although I have not been able to be around in school very often, I have kept in close touch with everything that is going on, and I have been delighted to hear how well everyone has been working and the positive attitude our students are showing towards their school and their learning. This was always going to be an exciting year for the School - our first year as a Specialist Business and Enterprise College, and the first year of our new vertical tutor group and House system. It has been an inspiration to me to hear how our staff and students are responding to these new initiatives, and working so well together.
At the recent meeting of the Governing Body, Mr Ian Donald was elected as Chair of Governors and Mrs Alison Williams as Vice-Chair. I would like to congratulate both of these Governors on their appointment to these positions of responsibility, and to take the opportunity to thank Mr James Murray and Mr Bryan Cope for their loyal service as Chair and Vice-Chair of Governors for the last few years.
Our new staff and students have all settled in well to the school. We have made two further appointments to the staff. Our new School Business Manager is Mrs Helen Simmonds. She is currently at Channel School in Folkestone, and will be taking up her appointment with us in the New Year. Mrs Linda Clarke has taken up her position as Administrative Assistant to the Business and Enterprise College.
Our Open Evening was a tremendous success, and a clear example of how impressive Team DGSB is when it is working together. Our prefects, student guides, helpers and speakers made a key contribution to the evening and were the subject of many positive comments from visiting pupils and parents. They showed a clear pride in their school, and their enthusiasm and confidence provided an excellent role model for our future pupils.
Opportunities for trips and visits for our students are increasing all the time, and I was pleased to hear how successful the Year 8 and 9 trip to Paris had been. Once again, our staff and students worked together to ensure that everyone enjoyed the experience and gained a great deal from it. Our students were a credit to their school.
We continue to be committed to improving our communication with parents. I hope many of you are taking the opportunity to attend our Information Evenings for parents. The 6th form and Year 10 evenings have already taken place, and seemed to be well received by those who attended. I would encourage you to take advantage of these events to find out as much as you can about what is happening for your son this academic year. In addition, please make a note of the Parents' Evening and Academic Review Day dates which are set out in your son's Planner. If you have any concerns about your son's progress in the meantime, please contact his form tutor in the first instance.
I would like to reserve my final thanks to Mr Pullen, Mrs Buckley, Mr Ralph, Mrs Barham and the rest of the staff who are working hard in my absence to ensure that the school runs smoothly and continues to provide the high quality learning experience your son deserves. Surely the sign of a good team is when the Headteacher has to stand aside for a while, and nobody notices the difference! I pay tribute to the staff and students who have made this possible. However, I am very much looking forward to being in the thick of things again!

Wet weather work in Geography
Friday 22nd September started reasonably well, with threat of showers, as a group of 16 Year 12 Geography students set off in the school minibus to Sandgate near Folkestone. Their aim was to examine the beach, part of Shepway's multi-million pound coastal protection scheme, to see if the huge rock groyne was effective.
They arrived, split into two groups and proceeded to measure the angle of slope on the beach and the distances between the sea wall and the shoreline. Then random selections of pebbles were measured and recorded. Are there bigger pebbles further up the beach? Are pebbles one side of the groyne bigger than the other? With the occasional spatter of rain the lads recorded everything diligently. After forty-five minutes we had completed all the surveys and repaired to the minibus as the drizzle set in.

By the time we had reached Walmer Castle beach it was falling more heavily. However, our valiant band went straight to work - measuring the considerably more extensive and gently sloping beach. Three quarters of an hour later the rain was much heavier: paper was disintegrating; ink was running; recording results was futile, so an early lunch was called for and onward to Deal we progressed. The rain did not cease so the field work had to be abandoned.
On Monday 25th September the weather was predicted to be awful - and it was, so a day visiting the sand dune ecosystem at Camber
Sands had to be "put on hold". However, glorious sunshine on Tuesday 26th allowed us to explore the village of Capel-Ie-Ferne in the morning and Charing (west of Ashford) in the afternoon. There were interesting contrasts between the two villages: the people in Capel were far more friendly and willing to answer questions; the village of Charing was far more attractive with much "nicer", historical buildings; Capel had glorious sea views - Charing was surrounded by farmland; Capel had only one, small but friendly, general store while Charing had a wide range of shops (butcher, green-grocer, two general stores, newsagents, clock repairs to name but a few); Charing had a small coffee bar while Capel had the Cliff Top Cafe!
Later, in early October, both 8 Castle and 8 Priory were lucky enough to spend a day on the beaches at Walmer and Deal to see what is being done to protect both towns from the danger of coastal flooding. 8 Channel were less lucky. At Walmer Castle Beach a set of surveys were completed before the heavens opened and an early lunch on the coach was called for. Then we drove on to Walmer Band Stand. As the coach arrived it began to spit and by the time everyone was lined up on the pavement it was raining heavily - so back on the coach, lads! We were driven on to Deal Pier and took shelter on the lower level. Suddenly it brightened up. Quick, lads, back along the pier to survey Deal beach. Phew! Our luck was in. The surveys completed it rained - quick! Shelter under the pier!
A little later it was clear again and a brisk walk took us to Sandown where each group surveyed a separate piece of the beach bounded by heavy wooden groynes. We were just making our way back to the coach, to go back to Walmer Band Stand as it started to rain again. However, not to be thwarted by anything as paltry as rain, we were able to delegate
3
one survey to each group and complete all four surveys in record time as the rain got heavier.

8 Port were "rained off" and, as we write, we anticipate fair weather on Friday 13th October when the last set of Year 8 Geographers will survey Walmer and Deal beaches. Though it may be damp outside, it seems not to dampen their enthusiasm, and, in general the boys worked well and seemed to enjoy "learning geography through the soles of their feet".

Library News
Inspirational beginnings ...
Welcome to all pupils who joined us in September. I have been heartened by how much enthusiasm the boys, in Year 7 particularly, have had for the Library and reading. So far this term, they have been visiting in droves to borrow fiction and use the resources for homework and assignments. All classes by now have completed a series of four literacy lessons introducing them to the delights of the Library, completing exercises, consolidating how the Library is arranged and getting them well on the way to becoming "independent learners". The number of specific requests for book titles has also been a joy. One of my main aims is always to encourage reading for pleasure. Without a doubt, boys do read! Thanks to J K Rowling, J R R Tolkien, Anthony Horowitz, Eoin Colfer and Christopher Paolini to name just a few, reading seems now to be "cool" again. Long may it continue.
Book Clubs
The Library has now two bookclubs, Scholastic and Puffin. Both are purely voluntary but the boys should receive two leaflets once a month to make a selection if they so wish.

Reading Groups Launch
This term I have launched a reading group with six Year 8 pupils. We have joined a book carousel where four books per term are rotated with three other schools, namely Astor College in Dover, Herne Bay High and Barton Court in Canterbury. During the summer term we hope to round off with an afternoon forum that we hope to host.
Voucher Schemes and Collections
Collection points for both are the Library, Form Tutors or reception. Participating in such schemes really does help.
Please keep on collecting and sending vouchers in.
Here's wishing you an enjoyable half term.

At last! The DGSB Mathematics Department Webpage can be found on the School Website at www.dovergramboys.kent.sch.uk. Follow the links through Departments/Maths and you will find more than enough to keep you occupied whatever your ability. There are practice papers, games, puzzles and a couple of random non-maths pieces which we hope you find of interest. Enjoy!

Meanwhile the Mathematics Department has been on the road taking the Fun Maths Roadshow to local primary schools. With an afternoon of activities aimed at Year 6 students, we are hoping to raise the profile of DGSB amongst our feeder schools as well as raising the interest of primary school pupils in mathematics. Already the visits are booked well into 2007 and there is talk of a mathematical activity day at DGSB next summer. Watch this space.

by Mrs F Lloyd, Subject Leader for Modern Foreign Languages
Tuesday 26 September was the European Day of Languages and we celebrated in the Hall, with various mini lessons and displays in several languages. My grateful thanks go to the members of staff and governor who very kindly took part, giving their time and expertise during lunch, manning and teaching Spanish, German and Greek. We also had a go at some very basic Chinese and some less basic Italian. Thank you to Mesdames Clough, Stubbs, Page and to Ben Baldwin and Ashley Cooper. Meanwhile, Dr Cruttenden was also teaching some ancient Greek!

If you use or have used a foreign language in your work, I would be grateful if you could get in touch with Mrs Lloyd at the School. We would like to help the students understand what a difference it makes!

by Mr P H Baldock, Director of Music
The first musical event of the new academic year took place on Thursday 7 September when an Instrumental Demonstration for Year 7 students took place. A number of different instruments were played by music students and visiting instrumental teachers. This generated much enthusiasm from the Year 7 students and it was good to hear many questions being asked about how the various instruments are played. On Saturday 9 September Year 7 students and their parents were invited to the school to meet the music department staff informally and try some instruments. The Saturday morning workshop was very popular, with a good number of students and parents attending. As a result a number of Year 7 students have decided to take instrumental lessons at the school. If any students and their parents were unable to attend the workshop but are still interested in finding out more about instrumental lessons please ask me for an information sheet and application form. Of course, any student in school is welcome to apply for instrumental lessons at any time.

The two main musical events of Term 2 will be the Autumn Guitar Concert and Service of Nine Lessons & Carols. On Thursday 16 November at 7:30pm we will be presenting another concert of music in a variety of styles by guitar students and staff of the school. The programme will include pop, jazz, rock and classical music and will feature the newly formed DGSB Jazz Band which has been rehearsing after school on Thursdays since September. This promises to be an excellent evening's entertainment; please come along and support the concert. By the way, this concert is not limited to students who have guitar lessons at school. If your son plays the guitar or bass and wants to perform at the concert tell me!

Following our centenary year the popular Service of Nine Lessons & Carols will return to the Parish Church of SS Peter and Paul, Charlton, Dover and will take place on Wednesday 13 December at 7:30 pm. This is always a beautiful and joyful occasion when the church is bathed in candlelight to set the scene for the magical and eternal telling of the Christmas story in words and music. Whilst staying true to the traditional nine readings and carols we will introduce some musical innovations this year including instrumental music performed by our talented jazz musicians.

by Mr S A White, Subject Leader for Physical Education
As per usual we have had a very hectic start to the sporting calendar at DGSB this September/October. By the time this newsletter reaches you we will have played twenty three football matches and thirteen rugby matches in the space of only six and a half weeks.
To have played a total of thirty-six matches in nearly as many school days is testament to the enthusiasm and commitment of both the pupils and staff at DGSB. Such a huge number of boys have given up both their lunch times and after school hours to train and play in order to improve their own levels of performance and help raise the sporting reputation of DGSB.
As you will see from the results listed later in this section the boys have made an excellent start to the season. Once again we have been blessed with a very strong Year seven football squad who can hopefully emulate their predecessors by retaining the Kent Cup this year. Further up through the school all year groups will be hoping to maintain their promising start and progress further in the County Cups.
With regards to Rugby we also appear to have gained a very large number of enthusiastic year seven students, who can hopefully gel as a unit as the season commences and produce similar results to those achieved by the other year groups so far.
I am very much looking forward to tracking the progress of all our sportsmen, both team and individual performers, over the course of this academic year and hope to bring you further news of success in the next newsletter.

Golf
Lloyd King (Yr11) and Bradley Kirkham (Yr9) recently represented DGSB in the Kent Schools Golf Championships for 13-20 handicappers. The event was held at Ashford Golf Club with over 40 competitors taking part. Both boys played well, especially Bradley who came 2nd in the Handicap competition with a net score of 71. Well done to both pupils.
Inter-House Football
The annual Inter House football tournament got underway last week for the Year 11 s. It was a close run affair, but after a number of postponements due to the poor weather the final results were:
| 1st | Castle |
| 2nd | Port |
| 3rd | Channel |
| 4th | Priory |
Inter House football for Year 10 will begin the first week back after half term.
Fund Raising
For a number of recent years DGSB has not been lucky enough to have its own cricket wicket within the school grounds. This has resulted in the boys having to play all of their matches away from home and rely on practising solely in cricket nets. However, the PE Department in conjunction with the PFA are attempting to raise funds for an artificial wicket to be installed on the lower playing field in time for this cricket season.
The PE Department will therefore be holding a sponsored walk to raise combined funds for both the artificial wicket and Sport Relief.

T EIEF
Sport Relief is an organisation which raises much needed cash to help vulnerable people leading tough lives here at home and in the poorest countries in the world. So far Sport Relief has raised over £31 million, which has been shared between projects in the UK and in the world.
Your son has been given a letter to bring home outlining when the sponsored walk will take place and how to gain sponsorship.
We would be extremely grateful if you could help your son to gain sponsors during the course of the half term in order to raise money for both of these worthwhile ventures.

| 1 | SCHOOL COUNCIL | _ |
by Stephen Golden, Chairman
This year we are aiming to make the School Council an integral functioning body within the school. To do this I have asked the form representatives to hold regular form councils to give us feedback as to how the school needs to be improved. An executive committee has been set up to discuss matters in finer details. Meetings are to be held every Friday alternating between the whole council and the executive committee. I have the full backing of Mr Pullen and Mrs Lees with whom I recently had a very encouraging meeting. There is also the consistent input of Mrs Bradford which will help us in our challenge to improve the school for the students by listening to the students. There will be a short assembly after half-term for every house on the School Council. I hope to see as many representatives as possible at future meetings.
Forthcoming Computer Courses
Some parents have contacted us in response to our previous advertisement concerning leT courses for parents, carers and members of the community. We are planning to run some of these courses in the near future. If you have not yet contacted us but would like to know more about the computer courses we are offering, then please contact us as soon as possible.
We are aiming to offer a range of computer based courses starting from the absolute beginner to the more advanced - sky's the limit!!
