Schools unite for prize day

    THERE was a sign of co-operation between the boys' and girls' grammar schools when girls' school headmistress Margaret Pope presented the prizes at the junior boys' prizegiving.
    Miss Pope congratulated the prizewinners on their achievements.

    Music was a feature of the event, as Patrick Jones played a cello solo, teacher Graham Lodder and pupils Sebastian Gough and Richard McPherson played piano solos, Paul Hearn played the clarinet and the school orchestra played Handel's Water Music.
    Reports were given by Jonathan Coates on environmental studies, Sam Causer on the German trip to Boppard and Stephen Durrant on the Latin visit to Bath.
    Lee Davison and Christopher Gale spoke on the French exchange with the College St Pierre, Calais and Cadet A Downing gave the CCF report.
    Prize winners were: Academic prizes: first year: Sebastian Gough; second year: John Whitewood; third year: Kenan Deniz and Stephan Durrant.
    K H Ruffell prize for geography: Adam Morris.
    Environmental Studies prizes: Ben Freebury, Sebastian Gough and Ian Matthews.
    Music prize: Kenan Deniz; Certificate for outstanding service to music: Daniel Wilkinson.
Nigel Pointer prize for special endeavour: Nathan Hook and Nigel Swain; Alan Paddock Memorial Prize for good fellowship: Mark Tillyard.
    Awards for Junior Cadets CCF, RN Section, Lavlih Cup: P Hearn; Army section, Payton Cup: R Deas; RAF section, Bridlington Cup: A Downing.
