Top referee hands out school's prizes

By John Mitchell

DAVID Elleray, who refereed this year's FA Cup final, returned to his old school to present the annual senior school prizes.

Mr Elleray, who referees top flight football matches every week in the Carling Premiership division and is often seen on TV, is now a teacher at the famous Harrow public school.

He was a pupil at Dover Grammar School for Boys in the 1960s and early 1970s.

The highlight of his football career was the cup final at Wembley in May.

In the match, he gave two controversial penalties - both converted - that saw Manchester United on their way to victory over Chelsea.

Head teacher Neil Slater told guests Mr Elleray had ambitions at school to become a teacher and football referee.

Mr Slater said he looked up Mr Ellerray's school record to embarrass him.

"They mainly speak of his strength of resolve, his conscientiousness, his friendliness and helpfulness," said Mr Slater.

He added: "They also speak with feeling about his appalling handwriting!" Mr Elleray, who spoke to the audience after presenting merit and GCSE certificates and prizes had arrived early to chat with and be questioned by A level sport studies pupils.
