AN OIL drum, plastic bottles and cups, a small anchor and chain along with other flotsam and jetsam were collected by youngsters on a Dover beach.
They gathered more than 70 large bags of rubbish from Shakespeare Beach on Sunday morning during the Operation Beach Clean '98 contest run by the civic group, The Dover Society.
Winner of a silver cup, donated by the society, was the TS Lynx, Dover Sea Cadets' team which narrowly collected more bags than the Dover Grammar Schools' Combined Cadet Force.
The society also entered a non-competing team but it had problems keeping up with the speedy and enthusiastic young teams.
Organiser of the clean-up was John Owen, chairman of the society's project group.
The conservation project was in partnership with Dover Harbour Board, owners of part of the beach, and the district council.
