BACK TO SCHOOL: Express journalist Terry Sutton |
Terry was a Pupil at Dover Grammar School for Boys from 1940-47.
He worked at the Express for 45 years before retiring four years ago and now works with the newspaper part-time.
Headteacher Ncil Slater told pupils and parents of Terry's still prodigious contribution to life in Dover.
Terry, 69, awarded the MBE for services to journalism and the community, is a committee member of the school's old boys group, the Old Pharosians' Association.
He also works voluntarily for about 10 town groups. These include St Martin's Emmaus charity, Dover Town Centre Management, Dover Rotary Club, Christians Together in Dover, White Cliffs Country Tourism Association and the Dover Society.
Mr Slater said: "Dover needs someone like Terry to stick up for it. He loves Dover and inspires others to work hard for its well being."
One of the awards Terry presented was the Roy Sutton Memorial Prize for English, in memory of his brother, killed in 1942 in the RAF. A total of 113 old boys of the school were killed in the two world wars.
Terry, who is married with a daughter and lives in Whitfield, told of his happy days at the school.
He revealed for the first time in nearly 50 years how he accidentally got pupils a half day oft in 1945, they returned to Dover from Wales and the school was occupied by the Wrens.
So the boys were split into three buildings, one the technical college in Ladywell.
On a cold day, Terry was asked to collect coke from the boiler room in the college basement.
Alone in the boiler room, he turned some of the controls.
Nothing happened and Terry thought he returned them to their previous position.
He went home for lunch and returned to find firemen ankle deep in hot water.
The boilers had blown because of a 'malfunction' and the boys were sent home!
