SCIENTIFIC TRIUMPH: Dover Grammar's Nick Hayward |
Nick Hayward, a pupil at Dover Grammar School for Boys, won first place at this year's national science fair after completing a summer work placement at Sandwich based drug company Pfizer. He will now go on to represent Britain at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair 2002 - the Science Olympics - in May.
Nick, who has now set his sights on Cambridge University, said: "I didn't expect
to win, particularly against strong competition. I'm delighted. Attending the
Intel ISEF will be a fantastic opportunity and I can't wait to go. I've always
been interested in pharmacology so winning was an honour for me.
"Pfizer was invaluable in increasing my understanding of
pharmaceutical research and development."
A Pfizer spokesman said: "Nick's project researched a
pioneering method of common organic synthesis. He exceeded all our expectations
and we think he has a very bright future."
Sponsors of the National Science Fair, Intel, said they were 'bowled over' by the knowledge he demonstrated.
