Ref new man at Old Pharosians
THE
next president of the Old Pharosians' Association - old boys of Dover Grammar
School - is to be the famous just retired football referee and Harrow
schoolmaster David Elleray.
Mr Elleray took charge of 1,780 games in his career, charted from his progress when he was at Dover Grammar School in the '70s.
His first send off was in a youth match at Maxton in 1968.
He's logged 246 dismissals, 2,064 cautions and a few death threats.
He was elected Vice-President, and president-elect, at the association's annual meeting at the school on Saturday when Ian Pascall was elected President. Mr Pascal! succeeded Roger Gabriel.
During the meeting it was agreed that enquiries should be made with Kent Education Committee officials at Maidstone, and elsewhere, about the future of grammar schools and their intake procedures.
Others elected were: Phil Harding from Elms Vale as secretary with Graham Tutthill as his assistant, Neil Beverton (treasurer), Dr Peter Burville (archivist), Terry Sutton and Mr Tutthill (newsletter editors) with Maurice Smith re-elected to the committee.
During the weekend it was announced that old boy Brian Newman (1947-1955) had donated £500 to a memorial to Ken Ruffell, the retired schoolmaster who died earlier this year. He had also made other donations to the school.
