Dover Grammar boys' cup triumph

DOVER Grammar School won the Kent Schools Under-15s Cup in front of a crowd approaching 400 at Crabble.

Dover captain Stephen Grant scored the only goal two minutes from the end of extra time to give his side victory over Gravesend side St George's.

Chris Keen, the Dover keeper, was tested early in the game by a powerful strike by one of the St George's strikers. Then, with nine minutes gone, Ben Walker struck the St George's bar.

Many Dover attacks followed, set up by Grant and Sammy Brannan, but the visitors' defence held firm.

Craig Higging almost put Dover in front early in the second half, while at the other end Keen made two excellent saves.

Then, with seven minutes left and the still goalless, St George's were awarded a penalty, but the Gravesend striker blasted his spot kick against a post.

The match moved into 'golden goal' extra time, where Keen clinched his man-of-the-match award with several more fine saves before Grant had the final word with a superb goal direct from a free kick.

Dover Grammar School head of football Wayne Howe said afterwards: "The school would like to thank Mick Kemp, Ashley Forecast and all the other Dover Athletic staff for allowing us to use their stadium for the final. "The organisation, the pitch condition and the buffet were all superb. "The boys will cherish this occasion for the rest of their lives and are deeply indebted to Dover Athletic for their hospitality."
