GREEN ENTERPRISE: Grammar school group voted best
YOUNG Enterprise company run by Dover Grammar School students has been voted the best in England.
The Green Footprint Group GFG) was set up by sixth-formers to encourage people and businesses to become more eco-friendly.
The group won the local, county and regional heats of the Young Enterprise competition, and went through to the national finals at the Park Lane Hotel in London.
GFG was named as best young enterprise company in England and second overall in the United Kingdom.
The group designed, produced and sold cotton carrier bags, delivered Eco Roadshows to primary schools and also encouraged businesses to provide sponsorship to help local schools to go green.
They also launched an online petition on the official 10 Downing Street website to call on the Government to provide more money and support for schools who want to “get green” and recycle.
“We’re over the moon,” said managing director Jack Williams.
“It’s unbelievable to be second out of more than 3,000 companies in the country.
“We’ve learnt so much in such a short time. The key to our company’s success has definitely been partnership with local business.
“To help us on our way with registering as a limited company, we were awarded £750.
“This means that we are certainly planning to continue with our current products and service range and are planning to expand, and now face the difficult and confusing form-filling for Companies House and the bank!
“We thank all those agencies and people who have helped this all to happen and make this so big.
“Hopefully Dover and the local area is on the map for something good again and we look forward to continuing working with you all to improve and protect our environments.”
Jack, who is now head prefect at the grammar school, is standing down as managing director, but will continue as business development director. His place is taken by Jethro Thompson.
The other group members are Katy Tipping, Sam Douglas, Ben Hindle, Tom Etheridge and Izaak Wilson
