Pupils win youth council vote.

STAFF and pupils at Dover Grammar School for Boys are celebrating this week after three of the four pupils who stood in the Kent Youth Parliament elections were voted in.

James Tapley, Luke McNicholas and Ranulph Goldfinch led successful campaigns and are now looking forward to taking up their places on the Kent Youth Council.

Citizenship lessons at the school have covered issues surrounding elections and democracy, so all pupils understood the importance of getting involved.

Head teacher Sally Lees said that she was very pleased with the turnout.

“Seventy-four per cent of the students in the school cast their vote, a much higher percentage than in adult local elections,” she said. “This is a sign that our students are interested in their community and understand the importance of playing a full part as a citizen of their town and country.

“Many of them have clear political opinions and want their voice to be heard. I know these new councillors will represent the views of their peers very clearly in the youth council.”
