Welcome to our school

Established in 1905, the Dover County School - as it was then called - had both boys and girls as pupils. Originally based in Ladywell, and then in what is now the Girls' Grammar School building in Frith Road, we first occupied our present commanding site, magnificent buildings and extensive grounds in 1931.

Thousands of boys have been educated here, and many have gone on to become leaders in their chosen careers not only in this country, but throughout the world.

The pupils were evacuated to Ebbw Vale during the Second World War. Many of the boys who attended the school during the 1930s served their country with distinction - some of them died defending their freedom, and they are remembered in the Memorial Window and the Book of Remembrance.

Having returned to Dover, the school went from strength to strength.

In April 1994, after warding off a series of the County's re-organisation proposals, our school became Grant Maintained. In September 1999 we again chose the option which gives us the greatest freedom to run our own affairs and we became a Foundation School.

We are delighted that places in the school have become so sought after and that the number of pupils is markedly increasing. We look forward to welcoming the September 2002 intake into the school community.

The Dover Grammar School for Boys is enjoying a period of ever increasing strength. It is thriving. Standards are improving in every way. It is a proud school, with an excellent and impressive academic record. It is well supported by the staff, parents, governors and the Old Pharosians Association - the old boys of the school.

We are confident that once selected for a grammar school education, your son will flourish here, and will be helped to reach his full potential. We offer a wide range of subjects and courses to both GCSE and A level.

We hope that within the pages of this prospectus, you will find all the information you need about our school. If you would like to visit the school, either on one of the occasions when organised visits are planned for prospective pupils and their parents or at another time to suit you, or if you have other queries or questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school to make the necessary arrangements.
