DESIGN
PROJECT W
Model Train Layout
A Model Train Club is planning a display of their trains at a village hall. You
have been asked to design a track layout that will fill a pre-determined area
with the following criteria:-
The track layout must contain at least two stations. Each station has two
platforms. The track is to be made in the form of a continuous loop and along
this track there is one tunnel, one level crossing, one bridge whereby the track
goes under the road, and one bridge where the track goes over a river, supplied
from a lake.
Please read these instructions and plan carefully before you start this design
project.
Using A3 paper, you will need a 30mm border, your name in the bottom right hand
corner and the following design criteria:-
The title of this folio is MODEL TRAIN LAYOUT and should be in neat letters of
your chosen style/font in the top-middle of the A3 paper.
The shape and size of the TRAIN TRACK is proportionally the same shape as your
A3 sheet of paper, after you have completed your name and title.
All tracks are EXACTLY 10mm apart and MUST be constructed using a rule and
compass. (Freehand drawing for the track is NOT acceptable). You need not show
the sleepers. All spurs off tracks MUST be smooth and constructed similar to
tangents off circles, the centre of which must be identified.
The border of this folio is to contain a KEY of symbols or colours of what you
have chosen to indicate on the layout of the plan of your layout. I.e. Stations,
trees, roads, rivers, tunnels, etc.
The main track can be either single or double, but must allow a train to be able
to access all tracks and either platforms, no matter which way it approaches
from.
You are NOT to use felt tip pens and I suggest a SHARP HB pencil for the train
tracks.
Marking scheme.
Name and title 10 points.
Key in margin 10 points.
Accuracy and parallel of train tracks 40 points.
Design and layout 20 points.
Neatness and overall effect 20 points.
