TABLE TENNIS

The School has a long tradition of sporting success and sport features prominently in school life. Every boy in Years 7, 8 and 9 has a double period allocated for Games, where a basic grounding in the major games is laid down through a variety of skill practices and small-sided games. Coaching is undertaken by our well qualified staff and outside coaches.

In Year 10 all boys have team games in autumn and spring terms with cricket, softball, athletics and weight training in the summer term. They can also choose PE as a GCSE option in which case they receive an extra four lessons. More senior boys have greater flexibility and can either play a major sport, or take advantage of facilities outside of school, at Dover Leisure Centre, Walmer and Kingsdown Golf Club, or Dover Water Sport Centre, for example.

Team Games are encouraged through the House System, and through a full fixture list against other schools in all of the major team sports (football, rugby, cricket) and many minor sports (table tennis, basketball, athletics, cross country, tennis and golf).

The School teams in football, rugby and cricket regularly do very well in their competitions against other schools. Each year the 1st XI Football team is one of the leading contestants in the East Kent Schools League whilst it and the more junior teams frequently win or are runners up in district competitions.

Several players have represented Kent schools in all major sports in recent years - we have had representatives from the school in Kent Schools teams at cricket and football and in England Schools' football at Under 19 level. The football tradition of the school is further enhanced by the support of the ex-pupil and FIFA referee David Elleray who refereeed the 1994 Cup final and regularly referees in the Premiership; and also fellow ex-pupil Phil Harding who is Secretary of the Kent Schools' FA and a committee member of the England Schools' FA.

The School also has a tradition of producing strong Rugby teams. Each year several boys play for the County side. Many former pupils make up the backbone of Dover Rugby Club.

The school has produced two Kent County Cricketers Derek Aslett and Chris Penn.

In all major sports the school's extensive playing fields are used - there are six pitches for rugby and football, a cricket square, and a Pavilion erected by the Old Pharosians.

The fields provide a splendid setting for our main Sports Day in the July. The School Swimming Sports are held at the Dover Leisure Centre Pool every year.

Five Table Tennis teams compete through the winter in the Dover Table Tennis League.
